Danielle Fanelle was about 9 when a school hearing test in her home state of New Jersey revealed she had minor hearing loss. At the time, an audiologist said it was no big deal, just something for her parents to monitor. But over the next nine years, minor became major.

HLAA Succeeds in Making Hearing Loss Visible to the CDC

In August 2015, when the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued the results of a survey that asked questions for the first time about disabilities, we were stunned to find that people with hearing loss were entirely left out.

HLAA sent letters to the CDC and to the White House, issued a media release, and an action alert asking consumers to express their thinking of CDC’s survey. Many of you sent emails with compelling stories, making it clear we should have been counted from the start.

HLAA Champions Affordable Hearing Aid Technology to President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology

The President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST) is an advisory group of the nation’s leading scientists and engineers who directly advise the president and the Executive Office of the President. The Council makes policy recommendations in the many areas where understanding of science, technology, and innovation is key to strengthening our economy and forming policy that works for Americans. On September 18, 2015, the Council discussed how technologies and policies for hearing aids affect older Americans.

HLAA Supports the HEAR Act

The time has come for Medicare to cover the cost of expensive hearing aids. On June 9, 2015, HLAA penned a letter of support for the Help Extend Auditory Relief (HEAR) Act, H.R 2748. On June 12, 2015, U.S. Representative Matt Cartwright announced the reintroduction of the HEAR Act, H.R 2748 with the support of 10 members of Congress. Cartwright first introduced the HEAR Act in 2013.

TDI has a full slate of prestigious presenters, including FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler, FCC Deputy Chief, Consumer and Governmental Affairs Bureau, Karen Peltz Strauss, and U.S. Department of Justice Deputy Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights Eve Hill.
